Tip of the week

What to do about a pulled muscle?

icebag

Pulled muscles occur when the muscle is stretched and it may result in small tears in the muscle. While to an extent this is a normal part of exercise, it can be more severe. To help a pulled muscle try these tips:

Rest It: That doesn’t mean you have to stop working out but you should avoid straining that particular muscle for a 1 or more days, for example if you do shoulder exercises one day, do legs the next.

Icing: Icing helps reduce swelling, this should be done soon after the pull occurs

Heating: Heating is done to reduce tension in the muscle

Stretch:Make sure to properly stretch your muscles to loosen them up and help to avoid future injuries

Zumba Zen

There I was trying desperately to keep up with Manuel as he salsa-ed and macarena-ed his way through another speedy dance number. Zumba, I have come to find out, is not only an exercise class… it’s an ego check. Just in case, when you walked through that studio door you were operating under any delusion that you had dancing skills, Zumba is here to show you otherwise. Maybe not Zumba as a whole, but at least my Zumba class, led by my booty shaking-arm swinging- hip gyrating master, Manuel.

I constantly am asking myself, “If he can get his hips to move that way, why can’t I? He is a guy after-all!” Is there some sort of introductory course in this technique that I missed? But even with my apparent lack of skills, I love going to Zumba. Like other fitness classes, Zumba is a great way to workout for an hour, which I may not do on my own. Also, I love how fun it is. Even if I am tripping over myself 60 percent of the time or staring with envy at the one woman in my class who apparently has Latin dance experience, it’s still a great time. The upbeat Latin music gets everyone excited, even the 60 + year old ladies in my class.

And if anything, Zumba has taught me not to take myself too seriously. No matter how hard you try there will always be someone better than you at something (ehem, Manuel). There’s no point in getting down on yourself, because the idea is to do something you enjoy not something you have to be the best at. So don’t be afraid to try that new class be it Zumba or yoga or step, and don’t be afraid of what you are going to look like, because let’s be honest, 95 percent of the class is focused on one thing only, and that’s themselves and how they are not going to fall over like a fool. No one is sitting there judging you, because who has time for that between step, step, cross, cross, and shimme? Never be afraid to try things you are interested in because of what other people will think, because 9 out of 10 times, they aren’t thinking about you at all anyway.

So whether it be a dance class, lifting in the boys section of the gym (you know the one), joining the archery club or what not, just get out there and try it and don’t forget it’s not about how good you are, it’s about how good it makes you feel.

Must Do in DC

The latest and greatest in restaurants, museums, and other activities

nats stadium

Nationals Baseball

I know what you are thinking, “Watch the worst team in baseball? Me?” But a game at Nationals Stadium is a good time. First, for major league tickets, you can get great seats for a reasonable price. Second, it is so accessible being right near the metro so you don’t have to pay with your first born child to park in the area like at some stadiums. Also, you will find a good selection of food options with everything from Ben’s Chili Bowl to Five Guys. Finally, despite being a not-so-great team the Nats play many great teams and every now and then you may be surprised by an exciting underdog win like I saw at the game verse the Red Sox. So get a group of friends together and enjoy a day (or night) at the ballpark.

Pump It Up!

You were appalled to discover that your walk to the mailbox (6 days a week might we add) does not actually count as physical exertion. How could that be, you were really feeling the burn for those 2 minutes there. Now what? Are we actually expected to exercise? Exercise can seem like a scary habit to begin, especially when you have so meticulously been avoiding the gym, mirrors, and bathing suits for the last five years. But no matter what your athletic ability may be, a couple of doctors seem to agree that working out is important. So how do you do it? Well there is always…

Option A:
Step 1) Take a few drama classes at the local theater. Once you have perfected your acting technique, try out for a major motion picture. Keep in mind that barring actually having talent or a history as a best-selling actress you may need to coerce directors, producers, and other seemingly important people (which can be identified by there possession of multiple cell phones and lack of personality) with money and lots of it.

Step 2) Once you have become a hollywood movie star, start acting out in public places. Might I suggest a few classics: Show up to a club half naked, get in a sordid relationship with your movie’s executive producer, or get in a sordid relationship with your movie’s executive producer’s wife and show up with her half naked at a club

Step 3) Once the paparazzi start swarming, you will be forced to run away just to maintain the slightest bit of privacy. All this running is bound to keep you in shape (not to mention the pressure from Hollywood and the free time and endless amounts of money at your disposal)

If perhaps you really feel that your current career in Biotechnology is worth saving then there is always…

Option B:
Step 1) Find a workout buddy. It is great to have someone who is ready to go workout even when you are not, someone who will say “come on, put on your sneaks, let’s go.” Choose someone who is passionate about exercise or who is at least excited about getting in shape. Remember it’s not a one way street, it is just as important for you to motivate them when they aren’t in the mood. Also, don’t feel pressured to find someone with your athletic ability, half the battle is just getting out there, once you are feel free to go at your own pace.

Step 2) Find exercises you like. There is nothing worse than spending a half hour on a treadmill if it makes you miserable. Exercise doesn’t mean one specific thing, there are many ways to workout: Swimming, dancing, tennis, biking, hiking. Find something that works for you. Don’t forget, each type of exercise requires a different level of exertion so depending on what you are doing you may need to spend more time at it.

Step 3) Pick a motivator. While losing weight is a motivator, it is kind of an abstract one. It is better to go with something tangible like “If I work out 5 days a week for the next month I am going to reward myself with those shoes I have been eyeing.” Think of something you want that is worth the work!

Step 4) Small steps! Don’t expect to go out there and run a marathon. Choose goals that are small and attainable and slowly build from there. Start with, “I am going to run 5 miles this week” or “I am going to spend 5 hours at the gym this week.” Think short term, even if those small goals are leading up to something bigger in the long run like, “I am going to do a triathlon in a year.”

If neither of these work, try running to your mailbox.. and while you’re at it, deliver all your neighbors’ mail to their doors too.
